Sigma To Launch Lenses for Nikon Or Canon Next Week? Possibly

Lens maker Sigma has scheduled a major launch event for next week and new lenses are sure to emerge from it.

Sigma’s YouTube channel has opened up a live feed to the lens maker’s special launch event that will be taking place next Thursday, October 5th at 8:00 am EST, 12:00 GMT and there’s been lots of speculation.

The obvious thing that many photography gear fans are expecting will be new lens announcements, but there might also be some real surprises, especially for specific camera brands.

For example, earlier in 2023, Sigma introduced two new Fujifilm X-mount lenses and one of them was a first of its kind.

These editions were the Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary and the Sigma 00-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary with the latter of the two being Sigma’s first ever telephoto zoom for the X-mount. We might see more Fuji X announcements next week.

Then there’s also the possibility of a new Canon RF-compatible lens or more plausibly, a new lens for Nikon’s latest Z-mount cameras.

Given the recent launch of the Nikon Zf full-frame camera, something for this mount wouldn’t at all be surprising even if Sigma hasn’t yet released lenses for Nikon Full-frame devices.

The company’s current lineup for Z-mount optics includes the decently-priced 16mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.4 DC DN lenses in the Contemporary lineup, but all of these are APS-C format optics.

As for a new lens that’s compatible with Canon’s RF mount, that would really be a piece of news. There has been speculation for a while now about Canon opening up its RF Mount to third-party makers like Sigma and Tamron but nothing definitive has emerged.

Since early 2023 though, many have been expecting such a release in the next few months or at least at some point in this year.

So far, a Nokton 50mm f/1 has emerged from Cosina for Canon’s EOS 4 system, but that’s just about it for this camera brand.

Another possibility from Sigma’s press event is the introduction of a new lens for the Fujifilm GFX system.

Despite offering affordable lenses for Fuji X Mount devices, Sigma hasn’t yet entered into optics for the Fujifilm brand’s medium format cameras, and seeing this happen with reasonable prices would be interesting.

Sigma’s media event is definitely going to reveal something interesting next week and if I were to bet, I’d say it has something to do with one of the above three camera brands, particularly Nikon. We’ll be sure to cover the details when they emerge.
